For generations, people born in Key West have proudly called
themselves "conchs" after the hardy sea mollusk that lives in the waters
surrounding the Florida Keys. The third annual celebration of their
heritage, the family-friendly ConchFest, is set for 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Saturday, March 2.
The festival is to feature
attractions ranging from cuisine to creative wares at Bayview Park,
located on Truman Avenue at the entrance to the island city's historic
Old Town. Admission is free.
Attendees can enjoy a conch cook-off showcasing the savory flavor of
Key West's favorite seafood. Traditional food and libations including
conch fritters and conch salad are to be available for purchase, as are
arts and crafts from on-site vendors. Among the scheduled activities are a co-ed softball tournament,
cheerleading, gymnastics demonstrations, kids' activities and
performances by Key West High School students. A free concert also is on tap, with live music by local favorites the
Bubba System and renowned Keys singer/songwriter Howard Livingston with
his Mile Marker 24 band. Commemorating Key West's longstanding tradition of community spirit
and acceptance, ConchFest is to raise money for the Rotary Club of Key
West's college scholarship program for local students. Event information: conchfestkeywest.com . Hope to see you there!
