3rd Annual Zombie Bike Ride

One of the kick off events for Fantasy Fest, which starts at the Recycle Bicycle Shop on Stock Island, is the Zombie Bike Ride.  This will be the 3rd year for this kooky and ghoulish parade, and it is quickly becoming one of the favored events to kick off the Festival week.  Zombies gather at the ReCycle Bike shop on Stock Island at 3pm.  If you need some assistance becoming 'zombiefied', there is face painting available at the shop and a raucous pre-parade party.  At 6pm sharp the Zombies take to their creepy crawly bikes and ride en mass to Salute on the beach for a DJ and zombie beach walk.  At 7:30pm the zombies leave the beach and head down to Duval Street infiltrating the town, and creating the Zombie Bike Festival.  Watch out!!!  The great thing about being a Zombie is that anyone can be a zombie, just a little tad of death paint and blood and you are good to go!  The bike shop will rent bikes to zombies without them and bike lights are a must!  Join in on the fun, be a zombie for a night and take over the town.  For more information and details go to:http://www.zombiebikeride.com/.

An Innkeepers Guides to Key West-Interview

Dean was recently interviewed in an article on NBC.com about a new series of Innkeeper’s Guides to popular destinations around the country. The guide was put together by inspired innkeepers, such as Dean and Paul, that wanted to help travelers learn about a community through the eyes of the locals and offer an inside scoop of things to do and places to go.  At the Mermaid & The Alligator we are all very proud of our little island city and love to tell guests the little secrets of the island, and work diligently to find just the perfect type of activity to suit each guests needs.  Now with the new guide book, An Innkeepers Guide to Key West', visitors have a great travel book with inside tips.  There are five other Guide Books out and more to follow.  To read the article on NBC.com visit http://travelkit.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/21/13990978-innkeepers-share-their-best-kept-secrets-in-new-guides?lite.  Remember when reading the article, that Dean was interviewed while he was vacationing in Costa Rica, that's dedication!

FasHOUNDista's

It is a well known fact that Caya and Havana run the show at the Mermaid.  Guests bring them gifts, open doors for them, feed them, play with them and many guests come just to see them. We get photos sent to our e-mail inbox addressed to Caya and Havana!  The two lovable pooches make the Mermaid a home as well as an Inn which is why our guests continue to return time and again.  The latest doggie news is the new necklaces that Caya and Havana have taken to wearing.  The unique and colorful necklaces are made from the Hawaiian Kukui Nut tree and come in a variety of colors.  The Kukui Nut is a sacred tree in the Hawaain culture and has been adorned and utilized for centuries.  Both Caya and Havana, always keeping up with fashion trends, enjoy sporting the necklaces and making a colorful and playful entrance.  If you have a loveable pet that also wishes to be the fasHOUNDista that Caya and Havana embody we sell the necklaces at the Inn.  Just ask and the doggies will be happy to model them for you.

The Grotto keeps us save from Tropical Storm Isaac

The News on TV blasts warnings and shows repeated footage of devastation from former massive hurricanes in other places making us all tired of the hype.  Not that we are not respectful of Mother Nature and the fury she can create, but our little island has been through a variety of storms and a tropical storm brings wind and rain, but not much to worry about.  And, it is a well known fact among locals that The Grotto at St. Marys, a small area where candles are lit in honor of the storm asking the Virgin to keep Key West safe, has protected us through numerous storms of varying degrees.  Owners Paul and Dean headed to the Grotto the day before Isaac descended on the island to pay their respects.  It is a place of silence and gratitude and also a place where community members, of a variety of faiths, can meet in unison, understanding the volatility of living on a little rock in the ocean and the grace by which we do. The Storm is passing now, it was mild and cooling. Key West sends thanks to our Grotto.

Fast Buck Freddies Pop Up Art Gallery

The time had come for the notorious Fast Buck Freddie's to close it store. The historic department store has been open on the heart of Duval St. for 37 years, and closed this July.   Locals lamented the passing of the store, mainly because they so enjoyed the fabulous window displays that would rival any on Sax 5th Avenue.  However, true to the local spirit of our little island, the owner, Tony Falcone, generously offered the vacant space to local artists, allowing many of our most talented artists a venue to display their art.  It's a treasure-trove for arts lovers.  The, now art gallery, is laden with a variety of art, from sculpture, to oil paintings, watercolor, acrylic, batik, photographic art, local books and the list goes on.  On Sunday August 19th stop by the store chat with and listen to talks by more than a dozen area authors. Among those who will sign their works or present short readings: Mandy Miles' newly released 'Only In Key West'; 'Mick Murphy' mystery writer Michael Haskins; ; David Sloan 'Key West Bucket List' and 'Ghosts of Key West'; Jonathan Woods 'Bad Juju & Other Tales of Madness and Mayhem', among many more. It is worth a visit to get the flavor of our eclectic and unique island.  Fast Buck Freddie's is located at500 Duval Street.

The best thing about summer time in the Keys, other than an icy cold Margarita, are the waters; invitingly warm and calm.  There is no better time to take the Ft. Jefferson Ferry out to the Dry Tortugas National Park. With smooth waters all the way the 60 mile ferry trip is a pleasant hour on the water and a great way to take in the magnificent view of Gulf Stream waters.  The coastal military fort started construction in 1825 to guard over the gulf stream trading routes.  It has a vast history serving as a military base, a union stronghold during the Civil War and a prison.  It is an adventure to wander through the old fort, imagining the days when soldiers had to live on the desolate island with only rain collection systems for water and cans of ham to sustain them.  The Fort is now a registered park and they offer daily tours to guide you throughout.  Once you have taken in the history of the fort the little island has a beautiful beach and offers the best snorkeling in the Keys.  The waters are pristine and one can swim around the edge of the entire fort's moat system, in only 3 feet of water, viewing numerous corals and sea plants growing along the old wall.  This area is teeming with reef fishes and is truly stunning.  The Fort Jefferson Ferry is a full day trip.  They offer breakfast on the ride out and a picnic lunch at the fort.  They do supply snorkeling equipment for those interested.  If you want a faster way out to the fort, there is a Sea Plane, that offers beverages and snorkel equipment, and is a half day excursion.  There is nothing like an air vantage point to appreciate the beauty of the Florida Keys.  The Fort Jefferson trip is extremely popular so it is best to plan ahead.  Talk to your concierges Geri or Rebecca and they can fill you in on more details and arrange a trip for you.  For information on the fort visit: http://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm

Cinema in the tropics at the TROPIC

On those hot steamy days, when you just need a break from the heat, it is a treat to visit the islands local cinema, the Tropic Cinema.  The Tropic, as locals call it, is small town cinema like the good ol' days.  For one thing it is clean; your feet do not stick to the floors and you will not find pieces of gum stuck to the bottom of your chair.  The theater is run by the citizens, everyone knows everyone, they are genuinely happy to serve you, offering fresh coffee, wines and an assortment of delectables at the 'snack bar'.   Best of all, when you sit down to enjoy your show, you are not inundated with commercials, constant, obnoxious and insulting.   The movie selections are various, many are the newest independent films as well as some of the box office hits that are more than special effects and big names.  The Tropic also picks great family films and have theme weeks where you can see old time favorites, for example all the  James Bond flicks, silent movies or nature films etc. Visiting the Tropic is a special treat and a little glimmer into a part of Key West that many visitors may not see.  Get out of the hot sun, take in a matinee while sipping wine and munching on chocolate covered almonds.  It takes you back to an era when going to the movies was enjoyable, civilized and affordable!  See you there!  For show times visit http://www.tropiccinema.com/main.html.

Royal Poinciana Season

Many comment that they 'miss the change of seasons' in the Keys, and that there are only two seasons  the 'tourist season' and the 'slow season'.  This is not true.  Although subtle, the Keys are graced with various seasons.   Take for example the blooming of the Royal Poinciana trees.  This typically happens in May or early June.  It is easy to realize why these trees are nick named the Flame Tree.  The bright blooms burst into various oranges and vibrant reds leaving the tree aflame.  They are particularly stunning on a clear blue day when the vivid oranges contrast against the crystal blue sky.  During this season locals enjoy taking a trip to the top of La Concha Hotel (the highest in town).  It is a great adventure to ride the five floors in the grand old elevator, all the way to the roof of the hotel where they have an open air patio.  From here you can see the entire island, and when the Royal Poinciana trees are in bloom it is truly a magnificent sight. If you visit during sunset, you can enjoy a cocktail from the open air bar, take in the sunset and cherish the stunning island view, ablaze in Poinciana blooms. The La Concha Hotel is located at 430 Duval Street.

Sunday Jazz in the Gardens

Summer is upon us on our little island.  The Royal Poinciana trees are starting to bloom and days are steamy.  If you are in the mood for music to go with the heat, there is no better place to be on a hot May Sunday afternoon than sitting in a tropical garden listening to jazz while sipping a Martini- shaken, not stirred.  The Gardens Hotel is a grand old home built in the 1800's surrounded by lush tropical foliage abundant with fountains, birds and giant Spanish earthen ware jars. Every Sunday afternoon at 5:30pm the Gardens Hotel offers jazz in the gardens.  The Gardens Hotel is an easy walk or bike ride from the Mermaid & The Alligator and an afternoon of jazz is a lovely way to spend a sultry Key West afternoon. Historic Home and Garden Tours, Feb 17&18.

Certainly Key West's conch cottages, grand mansions and historic homes add to the unique nature of our little island city. For such a small city, Key West is home to an amazing array of breathtaking architecture that spans over generations. Thanks to the lack of money in the early 1900's and then a few smart people who strove to preserve the old island homes in the 60's and 70's, Key West now offers an old world charm that attracts and enchants people. Evey year the Old Island Restoration Foundation hosts the Historic Home and Garden Tour, allowing visitors to go inside and explore some of the islands most amazing homes. The next tour date is February 17 and 18 from 10am-4pm. If you have never had the opportunity to go on one of these tours it is well worth the $25 ticket and a super way to really explore Key West and learn some of its tales and history. The upcoming tour has 5 homes listed plus 2 bonus locations. The first bonus location is the Old Firehouse that is not even open to the public yet. Soon to be opening as a Firehouse Museum, tour 1907 structure and see the steam powered horse drawn fire truck that served Key West. The second bonus location is the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden where your ticket will allow you free admission to GardenFest 2012, where you can join in on the plant and art fair and learn the history of the gardens themselves, once a WPA project to lure visitors to the keys. To see a listing of the 5 homes on the tour and more information visit: http://www.oirf.org/event.php?id=6. To purchase tickets visit the site or call 305-294-9501.
