South Florida Symphony presents "Beauty and the Bear,"
The South Florida Symphony, a unique gathering of professional symphonic musicians that began as the Key West Symphony, is to launch its 15th anniversary Master Concerts season. Each season the nationally recognized conductor and Key West native Sebrina Maria Alfonso brings together a core group of skilled musicians from around the country. The group is supplemented with other leading musicians and soloists chosen to enhance each concert program. This spectacular opening of the Master Concerts season features the renowned violinist Lara St. John. Canadian-born, St. John performed her first solo with an orchestra at age 4. She has appeared with orchestras on five continents and is widely acclaimed for her passion, charisma and power. In addition, she has recorded with prestigious orchestras including London's Royal Philharmonic. The performance is titled "Beauty and the Bear" and includes Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra" and Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 "Romantic." For the music lovers among us, it is a rare opportunity to enjoy world renowned musicians on our little tropical island. The concert is set for 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the campus of Florida Keys Community College. Concert tickets range from $25 to $75 per person depending on seat location and are available at keystix.com. The price includes an after-show reception with Alfonso, orchestra members and soloists.

Getting Ready for the Season
October is a great month at the Mermaid & The Alligator. After closing for 3 weeks in September and doing general maintenance, painting and deep cleaning the home is sparkling, beautiful and ready to receive guests. The Mermaid staff is rested after a 3 week hiatus and ready to welcome new visitors from around the world. October has an anticipatory energy as the locals await the day when the cooler air moves in blowing away the humidity. It is then that we know the season has really begun. The restaurants all open their doors with new items on the menu, the local theaters advertize thier upcoming season and festival after fun festival takes to the streets of Key West. Both Caya and Havana bounce around the house ready to greet and play with the arriving guests. Many of our regular Mermaid Guests return and it is always great to hear about their news over the past year and equally as fun tell them about our news and great events in Key West. With the Fantasy Festival just a couple weeks away, locals are planning their costumes for the 'local parade' and joining in on the fund raising efforts for AIDS HELP. Its a great time of year to be in Key West! We look forward to a great upcoming season and greeting new guests, and thank you to all of our past guests, we hope you can return again soon!- The Mermaid StaffSunday, September 23, 2012

The Grotto keeps us save from Tropical Storm Isaac
The News on TV blasts warnings and shows repeated footage of devastation from former massive hurricanes in other places making us all tired of the hype. Not that we are not respectful of Mother Nature and the fury she can create, but our little island has been through a variety of storms and a tropical storm brings wind and rain, but not much to worry about. And, it is a well known fact among locals that The Grotto at St. Marys, a small area where candles are lit in honor of the storm asking the Virgin to keep Key West safe, has protected us through numerous storms of varying degrees. Owners Paul and Dean headed to the Grotto the day before Isaac descended on the island to pay their respects. It is a place of silence and gratitude and also a place where community members, of a variety of faiths, can meet in unison, understanding the volatility of living on a little rock in the ocean and the grace by which we do. The Storm is passing now, it was mild and cooling. Key West sends thanks to our Grotto.

Forbidden Fruit - Key West Burlesque
People love Key West because although it is a small island, a very small island, there is always something dynamic and 'larger than life' going on. A little something for everyone. The Key West Burlesque is our little island's only unique and talent laden burlesque. It is a mixture of the Moulon Rouge with a touch of Rocky Horror and a taste of musical panache. It is wild, it is sassy, it is sexy! "Forbidden Fruit, Key West's Juiciest Show" directed by Tatah Dujour includes dance, song and a variety of entertainments. It features a rotating cast of performers and KW Burlesque's very own band, The DuJourchestra! Not only is it a fabulous night out with laughter and entertainment, but one gets to experience yet another aspect of Key West art and theater. Certainly a show to see if you haven't! It is an adult show so keep the little ones at home. "Forbidden Fruit, Key West's Juiciest Show" plays every Friday thru September 7th. Show time at 8:30pm. Dinner & Show package available. At Mangoe's Upstairs Theater, 700 Duval St., Reservations: 305-771-0279.

Historic Home and Garden Tours, Feb 17&18.
Certainly Key West's conch cottages, grand mansions and historic homes add to the unique nature of our little island city. For such a small city, Key West is home to an amazing array of breathtaking architecture that spans over generations. Thanks to the lack of money in the early 1900's and then a few smart people who strove to preserve the old island homes in the 60's and 70's, Key West now offers an old world charm that attracts and enchants people. Evey year the Old Island Restoration Foundation hosts the Historic Home and Garden Tour, allowing visitors to go inside and explore some of the islands most amazing homes. The next tour date is February 17 and 18 from 10am-4pm. If you have never had the opportunity to go on one of these tours it is well worth the $25 ticket and a super way to really explore Key West and learn some of its tales and history. The upcoming tour has 5 homes listed plus 2 bonus locations. The first bonus location is the Old Firehouse that is not even open to the public yet. Soon to be opening as a Firehouse Museum, tour 1907 structure and see the steam powered horse drawn fire truck that served Key West. The second bonus location is the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden where your ticket will allow you free admission to GardenFest 2012, where you can join in on the plant and art fair and learn the history of the gardens themselves, once a WPA project to lure visitors to the keys. To see a listing of the 5 homes on the tour and more information visit: http://www.oirf.org/event.php?id=6. To purchase tickets visit the site or call 305-294-9501.

During the winter months Key West is alive with artist receptions, art shows, craft fairs and the like. If you have never spent time meandering through the numerous galleries, antique stores and boutiques now is the time to do it.
